Anyone is capable of being able to negotiate debt settlements with credit card companies or any other creditor, provided they have some help and advice on how to go about it. It is quite common for credit card companies to agree to settle outstanding debts for much less than the full amount that is owed, but they will only do this in certain situations, so you first need to understand how this process works.
There is an entire industry that exists to negotiate debt settlements for credit card debt and other similar creditors, but it is also possible to undertake this negotiation yourself. The best debt settlement companies are very good at what they do and will usually get more than half of your debt written off. However, they will charge you for their services, and you can save quite a lot of money by undertaking the process directly.
It is worth being aware that a credit card company is unlikely to agree to settle your debt for a lot less than you owe them unless they think that is the most they are going to get. Being able to negotiate a reduction in credit card debt or any other unsecured debt depends in part on your overall financial situation. If a creditor thinks that you can afford to repay the debt in full if you really want to, they are unlikely to settle for less. Debt settlement by negotiation is most successful for people who are in genuine hardship. If you really do not have enough money coming in to keep up with the repayments on your debts, you are a good candidate for being able to negotiate credit card debt reduction.
If a creditor understands that you genuinely cannot afford to repay the full amount, and thinks that there is a danger that you may need to declare bankruptcy, they are much more likely to settle for a reduced amount. Getting something back from the debt is better for them than the risk of perhaps getting nothing back at all. Being able to realise the maximum discount on your debts depends almost entirely on having a good understanding of how credit card companies operate, and in particular, how they deal with bad debts and charge offs.
The negotiation process is not just about playing hardball with your creditors. That in itself will do you no good at all. What you need to know is what processes each credit card company follows with regard to an unpaid debt. Understanding when a debt is charged off is crucial, so that you can time your approaches for the maximum effect. Knowing when to ignore calls and when to make an offer is the difference between being sued or getting most of your debt written off.
The main choice you face with regard to being able to negotiate credit card debt reduction successfully is whether to use a professional company to do it for you, or undertake the process yourself. If you are not confident about being able to negotiate settlements yourself, you can find a list of some of the most reputable and effective companies on my Debt Settlement page. If you wish to do the negotiating yourself, you are going to need some guidance.
If you search the internet you will find many publications that claim to show you how to negotiate debt reductions, but many of them are simply statements of the obvious and do not offer really solid practical guidance from people who have been there and done it. I have trawled through these and identified what I think are the best ones on my Learn Debt Negotiation page. These range from excellent e-books that include detailed step by step instructions, to full training courses with one to one support.
